Dakshina Kannada & Kodagu

  Library Association (Regd.) Udupi

  Prof. Ku.Shi. Haridas Bhat

The genesis of Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu Library Association (R) goes   back to 1970 in Udupi and it owes its existence to the efforts of bibliophiles in general and  Late Prof. Ku.Shi.Haridas Bhat in particular. Though Kushi was a great Kannada writer and not a library professional, he was a great book lover and respected our profession. In 1972 the association had its first milestone, under the able guidance of Late. Dr.T.M.A.Pai, the association shouldered the challenge of organising an International Library Fest for three days bringing together librarians, teachers, scholars and readers. Sri I. Ananda Rao, Prof. Shekar Idya, Late.Dr. N.B. Pangannaiah, Prof. P.Somashekhar Rao, Sri S. Mohan Rao joined hands with Prof. Ku.Shi. in ensuring that the  Association grew strong roots and led to a  revolution in the then undivided  district. Late Prof. H.Gopala Krishna Rao, Dr. H.Shantha Ram and the members of Manipal Academy were the backbone of the movement who made it possible for the association to be registered as Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu Library Association. The other personality who stood behind Kushi in the initial growth period was late Dr. Dayanand Pai, the then librarian of KMC, Manipal.

The association is not confined to academic circles alone and has regularly catered to the needs of the general public by contributing towards the development of Public libraries and Special libraries.  Our Association is dedicated to conduct professional programs like invited lectures, workshops or seminars for the benefit of professionals/members in that region and throughout nation.

It should be gratefully remembered  that the UGC Pay Scale for the college librarians of Karnataka owing to the  earnest efforts of Kushi Haridas Bhat who could prevail upon Sri.Veerappa Moily in bringing about the desired result. The association remains indebted to the contributions of Late.Sri.Akambara Rao, Mangalore and Sri.H.Vishwanatha Kamath,Mulki.
